With the right mattress, mattress and bed, you can achieve the quality sleep your body needs for overall recovery. In addition, you can promote restful sleep by other methods. Like bear’s milk. What else works?

What is insomnia or insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that manifests itself in disturbed falling asleep or sleep progression. Usually you can’t fall asleep at night, and when you do fall asleep, you wake up early and can’t fall asleep again. Insomnia is also manifested by frequent night waking.

Insomnia is not just one. It comes in 3 forms:

  1. Transient – usually lasts for a week and is the result of current stress,
  2. acute – usually lasts up to a month and should be discussed with a doctor,
  3. chronic – lasts more than a month and sleep disturbances occur at least 3 times a week.

How does lack of sleep affect your health?

Sleep is extremely important for your health. Your body regenerates and gathers strength for the next day. Good quality sleep also has a significant impact on your mental condition and is important for the formation of memory traces, as well as the proper functioning of your metabolism and immune system.

Poor quality sleep manifests itself:

  • with fatigue,
  • malaise,
  • with irritation,
  • impaired concentration,
  • in a bad mood,
  • mood swings,
  • health problems (for example, high blood pressure),
  • premature aging, etc.

The 3 pillars for a healthy sleep: bed, mattress, mattress topper

Before you start looking for old wives’ advice to help with insomnia, or before you see a specialist, think about whether you have a suitable environment for sleep. It’s not just about room temperature, perfect darkness or silence, it’s about the bed, mattress and grid.

The most comfortable boxspring bed

One of the most comfortable beds today is the boxspring bed. In the past, you could only sleep on them in the most luxurious hotels. Today, you can get them for your home. What makes them unique?

The base of the bed consists of a boxspring. It is a solid frame filled with springs. The springs act as a grid and help to distribute the pressure exerted on the mattress. Boxspring beds are higher than conventional beds, so they are comfortable to lie down in, but also easy to get up from. The height of the sleeping surface can be up to 60 cm above the ground, which is appreciated not only by seniors. It depends on the thickness of the mattress.

Since the main sleeping mattress is placed on the spring base and a third thin mattress or topper is placed on top of it, the boxspring bed boasts a system of 3 mattresses that perfectly follow the shape of the human body, offer the necessary support and perfectly distribute the pressure. Therefore, you can sleep soundly on the bed without the need to change sleeping positions.

Another element that contributes to a comfortable rest is the high upholstered headrest. It protects you from the cold permeating the wall behind the bed, gives you a feeling of security, and if you like to read in bed, you can lean on it comfortably.

Choose a bed with regard to the size of the bedroom. Don’t forget to take your health into account.

  • Beds with dimensions of 160 × 200 cm are suitable for small bedrooms.
  • For a large bedroom, place a boxspring bed of 180 × 200 cm, 200 × 200 cm or extended beds with a width of 180 cm and a length of 220 to 230 cm.
  • Elderly people and people with health problems will appreciate a bed with a reclining mattress that allows them to adjust the inclination of their head and legs.

A mattress that meets the demands of a comfortable sleep

Do you sleep poorly? Maybe you have a bad mattress. If your mattress is more than 7 years old, has visible damage and feels worn, it’s time to reach for a new model. Read more about replacing mattresses.

When choosing a mattress, consider your needs and health requirements. If your back, cervical spine, hips or spine hurts, choose an orthopaedic mattress made of lazy or memory foam, which distributes pressure well and relieves your joints. Ideally, a medical mattress has 7 anatomical zones. These make sure that your spine is in an optimal position during sleep and that you don’t have any pain when you wake up.

When choosing a new mattress, look for:

  • Length – the mattress should exceed you by 25 cm, mattresses are also available with an extended length of 210 to 220 cm.
  • Height – The height or thickness of the mattress affects how comfortably you sleep on the mattress. In general, the higher the better. For everyday sleeping, mattresses with a height of 20 cm or more are best.
  • Stiffness – choose according to your weight and health requirements. For the elderly and people weighing up to 70 kg, softer mattresses are suitable, for overweight people, firmer and harder mattresses.

The quality of sleep is also affected by the hygiene of the mattress. Old mattresses that are not regularly maintained can cause respiratory diseases.

A big chapter is the selection of production material. Each material has different properties that match your health requirements, but also the type of grate.

  • Latex – is a softer foam that is breathable and adapts to the shape of the body. It is not suitable for people who sweat more.
  • PUR foam – foam mattresses are the most affordable. They come in a range of firmnesses and are often combined with other foams.
  • Cold foam – is more breathable, elastic and dimensionally stable than PUR foam. It is often combined with PUR and lazy foam.
  • Lazy foam – changes its stiffness depending on body temperature. It is suitable for people suffering from joint and back pain.
  • Bio foams – are made from natural oils and are therefore resistant to microbes and mould. They are suitable for allergy sufferers.
  • Spring mattresses – The core of the mattress consists of either bonell springs or pocket springs. Bag mattresses are the most comfortable in the range of spring mattresses. Generally, box spring mattresses are suitable for younger people and for overweight sleepers. Due to their perfect breathability, they are also suitable for less ventilated areas.

A grid that gets along with the mattress

The grid in the bed isn’t just to keep the mattress from falling to the floor or into the storage compartment. It helps the mattress to distribute pressure, but it also brings plenty of fresh air to the mattress. This means that mould doesn’t form and dust mites don’t breed in the mattress.

Thanks to the elasticity of the grid, the mattress retains its anatomical and stable surface. The greater the resilience of the grid, the better protected your mattress is.

The grates are available in several designs:

  • Slatted grate – This is the most affordable grate, which is less flexible. It can be combined with higher mattresses. It is ideal for spring mattresses.
  • Slatted grate – is characterised by its high elasticity, so it can cope with thinner mattresses. It is most often used for foam mattresses.
  • Tiltable grate – is installed in beds with storage space. It can be slatted or slatted.
  • Positioning grids – allow adjustment of the inclination in the head and foot area. The adjustment can be done either manually or electrically. Reclining mattresses are suitable for people with reduced mobility, but also for all those who want a good night’s sleep. Foam mattresses are placed on it. It is not compatible with spring mattresses.

Choose the grid according to:

  • type of mattress – foam mattresses are suitable for slatted and positioning grids, spring mattresses for slatted grids,
  • load capacity – the load capacity of the grate should be 15 kg more than your weight,
  • the size of the bed frame – the grid must fit the bed perfectly.
