You will surely agree that choosing a quality mattress is absolutely crucial for a healthy sleep without back pain. But how do you choose the right one when there are several types of mattresses on the market? In this article, we’ll explain the difference between a spring mattress and a pocket spring mattress, what their advantages are and who they are suitable for.
The terms spring and pocket mattress are quite confusing. Why? While a pocket mattress is essentially a special spring mattress, a spring mattress is not necessarily a pocket mattress. So, we’ll tell you what’s actually going on with these mattresses in the following lines.
Spring mattresses may have an unpleasant squeak associated with them for some of us. While modern spring mattresses also contain springs just like their predecessors, the high quality of the materials used and the strength of the springs means that you don’t have to worry about the springs squeaking or even cracking.
The cores of modern spring mattresses and pocket mattresses are made up of springs, while in the case of pocket mattresses the springs are hidden in the packaging, the so-called pockets. The outer side of the mattress core can be made up of different materials, most often in the form of cold foam or coconut board or latex. The spring core provides high stability and durability, while the outer layer provides comfort.
Spring mattresses are available in two variations, you can find a classic spring mattress, also called a bonell, or the aforementioned pocket mattress. There are several differences between these mattresses and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. So, let’s take a look at these mattresses, or should we say, the wire?

In the case of classic spring mattresses, also known as bonell mattresses, the individual springs are made of thinner steel wires and interconnected, so that the springs do not loosen and hold their shape when the mattress is in use. The moment you lie down on such a mattress, the pressure is spread over several springs.
One of the key advantages of classic spring mattresses is that the mattress is breathable, air circulates during sleep and the mattress can breathe. Another advantage is that they can respond to the body even on a firm base. Last but not least, you will be pleased with their affordable price and long life.
The disadvantages of mattresses made of bonell springs are higher weight, limited possibility of combining the mattress with a positioning mattress and lower load capacity of the mattress.
Classic spring mattresses are appreciated by those who prefer a medium to extra firm mattress, with softer spring mattresses containing softer foams and firm mattresses containing firmer foams. These are also a good choice for rooms with higher humidity, as these mattresses are much more breathable than foam mattresses.
This type of mattress should be avoided if you want to sleep with your partner on one large double mattress. This is because if one partner rolls over on their half at night, the movement will be transferred to the other half of the mattress. Spring mattresses are also not suitable for long-term patients, the elderly and people with orthopaedic problems.
TIP: Sleep better than ever
Not only will a quality mattress help you sleep better, but also 8 tips for a better night’s sleep that you may not have heard of.
The difference between classic spring mattresses and pocket mattresses is that pocket mattresses do not have springs connected together by wires. In fact, the name pocket sprung derives from the fact that the springs are contained in small fabric pouches. This also allows each spring to compress independently and the others to remain motionless. So if you lie down on the mattress, only the springs that are being pressured will be compressed. Compared to conventional spring mattresses, pocket sprung mattresses also have significantly more springs.

Bag mattresses are also popular because they are very airy. Another advantage is that they have a high elasticity point and adapt perfectly to your body. They have a higher load capacity and are suitable for people up to 150 kg. These mattresses can also have springs in different zones with different wire strengths.
The main disadvantage of bag mattresses is the higher weight compared to foam mattresses. They cannot be used on reclining mattresses.
Bag mattresses are suitable for everyone regardless of age, i.e. for children, adults and seniors. Just like classic spring mattresses, pocket sprung mattresses are also suitable for places with higher humidity, for example cottages, cottages or caravans.
