Practical tips for choosing the best mattress for your hotel

The mattress is an important factor that determines the guest’s satisfaction and the hotel’s reputation. A different mattress is suitable for each type of accommodation. When choosing, you need to take into account not only the budget, but also the classification of the hotel. While affordable PUR foam mattresses are suitable for two-star guesthouses, five-star hotels invest in luxury pocket mattresses and natural materials to ensure maximum comfort for guests.

A good hotel mattress is the key to a good night’s sleep

Whenever a guest books a stay at a hotel, they expect a good night’s sleep. That is why you need to invest in a quality mattress that will satisfy this need. Guest satisfaction is crucial for a hotel, which is why it is important to take care when choosing a mattress. Although the design of the bed is the first thing that catches the eye of visitors in a hotel room, they will immediately realise its comfort as soon as they lie down on it. And comfort is the factor that determines whether a guest will be satisfied or not.

In order for mattresses to withstand the stresses of use while still providing a comfortable rest for each guest, it is important to choose mattresses made of high-quality and durable materials. Mattresses for hotels are designed to cater to a wide range of guests. Although not all hotel mattresses are the same, medium-firm hybrid mattresses that combine a spring core with comfort foams are the most suitable choice.

What features should a quality hotel mattress have?

  • It should be made of durable materials,
  • the cover should be treated against pests,
  • it should be breathable.

Medium-firm mattresses, which are referred to as T2 or T3, are the ideal choice for hotels. They are compatible with most sleeping positions:

  • on his back,
  • on his stomach,
  • on the side.

You can easily adjust their stiffness with a softer or stiffer topper. You can also choose a double-sided mattress that is firmer on one side and softer on the other. Guests can choose the firmness before arrival.

The best materials for making durable hotel mattresses

Hybrid mattresses, which combine springs and soft foam layers, are designed for hotel environments. You can also choose foam sandwich mattresses, which are made from different types of foam. By combining foams, you can choose a mattress with the properties you need, such as one that is breathable and conforms to the curves of the sleeper or one made from natural materials for guests who suffer from allergies. Given the stresses that hotel mattresses are subject to, reach for those with high foam density in the case of foam mattresses.

Hotel spring mattresses: bonell and pouches

Thanks to the modernisation and development of mattress manufacturing technology, you will hardly come across any spring mattresses that squeak anymore. Springs are made of metal or steel wires of various thicknesses. Mattresses filled with bonell or pocket springs are available. Both types have the advantage of excellent breathability and long retention of their properties.

Hotel mattresses with bonell springs

Bonell springs have been on the market longer than pocket springs. They are suitable for two- and three-star hotels. The individual springs are connected to each other by corrugated wire to form a single unit. As a result, the mattress maintains the same firmness throughout the entire period of use.

The disadvantage of these mattresses is motion transfer, and therefore they are not the best choice for filling large double mattresses. We therefore recommend that you insert two separate mattresses with bonell springs into the double bed.

The load capacity of bonell mattresses is around 130 kg. They are not recommended for the elderly and guests with joint problems. They are best combined with a boxspring base or slatted grid. Do not place them on reclining grates due to the possibility of spring deformation.

Hotel mattresses with pocket springs

Bag mattresses are among the most luxurious. That is why they are most often supplied to three, four and five star hotels. Their advantage lies in the possibility of zoning. Each part of the mattress has a different firmness to match the demands of a particular body part. This ensures optimum support for the musculoskeletal system. Guests get up in the morning without pain in the back, cervical spine, hips or joints.

Each spring is stored separately in its own pouch. Because the pouches and not the springs are connected, the pouch mattress does not move and therefore two sleepers on the same mattress are not disturbed when changing sleep positions.

This type of mattress is suitable for all guests regardless of age: children, seniors, adults. Since they have an even higher load capacity than bonell mattresses, even guests weighing up to 150 kg can sleep well on them. As with bonell mattresses, we do not recommend combining them with a positioning mattress.

Springs combined with comfort foams

Spring mattresses are combined with various foams and natural materials. These include a cotton layer that prevents the springs from compressing. A coconut board can also lie between the springs and foams. In terms of foams, the most popular combination is springs and memory, cold or PUR foam. There are also natural foams, including latex.

Foam mattresses for heavy duty hotel operations

Foam mattresses are usually designed for two- and three-star hotels. They are combined with a boxspring base, a flexible slatted mattress or a reclining mattress. As they are less breathable than spring mattresses, they are not recommended to be placed on a slab mattress.

Thanks to the wide range of foams, the range of foam mattresses is wide. You can choose a monoblock mattress, which is made from just one type of foam, or reach for a sandwich mattress, which combines different foams. Since each foam has different properties, it is better to choose a sandwich mattress. Such a mattress will satisfy guests with a variety of requirements.

As with springs, foam manufacturing has moved on, so you don’t have to worry about foam mattresses adding to the heat and making guests overheat. Today’s foams have a more open texture, making them more breathable.

By combining foams of different firmness, foam mattresses with zoning are available. Each part of the mattress is differently stiff and corresponds to the requirements of a specific part of the body. It ensures proper posture of the spine and eliminates getting up with pain in the support apparatus.

The following foams are most commonly used for production:

  • PUR foam – known as foam. Its advantage is its low price. Quality PUR foam is characterized by high density, thanks to which the mattress retains its properties for a long time. It is available in different firmnesses.
  • HR foam – cold foam is more breathable than PUR foam, has higher elasticity and better retains its shape stability.
  • Memory foam – its stiffness adapts to the heat of the human body. Therefore, it is optimal for people who suffer from joint and back pain.
  • Latex foam – this is a natural material made from the sap of the rubber tree. It is also suitable for allergy sufferers.

Caring for a hotel mattress

To ensure maximum bed hygiene, you need to vacuum the mattress regularly and clean it thoroughly several times a year. You can increase the durability and hygiene of your mattress by covering it with a cover with an anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-bug treatment. Place a washable mattress protector over the cover that is breathable but impermeable. This will protect the mattress from liquids and moisture.

Protect the mattress from unnecessary rapid wear and tear with a topper. This protects the mattress from food dirt, dust and other contamination. Turn the mattress regularly.

Mattresses by hotel classification

The classification of the hotel often determines the quality and type of mattresses. For accommodations with fewer stars, we produce mattresses that combine durability, comfort and affordability. For hotels with a higher star rating, high-end mattresses are designed to offer maximum comfort combined with durability.

Five-star hotels

The most luxurious hotels boast large single rooms with a floor area of at least 15 m². Double rooms are larger and have a floor area of 24 m². Of course, you can sleep on high boxspring beds, complete with mattresses 26 or 32 cm thick. These are most often mattresses with a core of pocket springs combined with natural materials such as latex or coir. High memory foam mattresses are also popular.

Four star hotels

In four-star hotels, single rooms are at least 11.4 m² and double rooms are 13.3 m². Hotel rooms are usually equipped with luxury boxspring beds with high mattresses. A combination of pocket springs or bonell springs with comfort foams is ideal. The spring core can be supplemented with natural breathable latex foam, memory foam or cold foam. There are also double-sided mattresses, where one side is firmer and the other softer, and mattresses with herbal extracts.

Three-star hotels

Rooms in three-star hotels are smaller. The size of a single room is 9 m² and that of a double room is 13 m². Boxspring beds have a wooden frame filled with bonell springs. A mattress with a core of pocket springs or bonell springs combined with high-density PUR foam is placed on the boxspring base. PUR foam mattresses are also designed for these hotels. A natural coconut board can add firmness to the mattress. Mattress heights range from 16 to 21 cm.

Two-star accommodation

The lowest category of accommodation has single rooms of 8 m² and double rooms of 12.6 m². They are equipped with the basic hotel bed type, which consists of an upholstered bed frame with an integrated slatted grid. The bed is covered with either a mattress with Bonell springs in combination with PUR foam or a PUR foam mattress. Their height is 16 or 18 cm.
