Simple instructions on how to make your bed look like something from a luxury hotel

Pillows, cushions, shawls, blankets, bedspreads, runners. You’ll need these six essential accessories to make your bed feel like a hotel. Properly stacked pillows and other decorations will make an ordinary bed irresistible. How to arrange everything correctly? We’ll give you advice.

A nicely made bed invites you to rest

For many, a made bed is a symbol of cleanliness and order. After all, making the bed every day is a ritual or habit that parents teach their children from a young age. Why is this so? Because a made bed invites rest, is aesthetically pleasing and adds to the tidiness of the bedroom. The sight of an unmade bed can evoke negative feelings, and you may not sleep well in a messy bed.

Stelte, but not right after you wake up

Remember what grandmothers do with quilts in fairy tales? The first thing they do is take them outside on a bench or throw them out the window. And that’s just as well. You sweat out about 1 to 1.5 liters of water every night. Dust, skin particles and hair settle in the fabric of the sheets. It’s all a breeding ground for bacteria and mould. That’s why you shouldn’t make your bed as soon as you get up. On the contrary! Leave the duvets off. Open the window and let the bedroom air out.

Take a shower or have breakfast before you go to bed. The bed will air out and dry out well. Then you can start making the bed. Make sure the duvet and pillows are well rubbed. They’ll get more fresh air from the open window.

Learn to dress properly

The overall look of a made bed is not just about how many small pillows or throws you have on it. Choosing the right sheets and bed linen is crucial, as is putting them on. If the duvet is wrinkled in the sheets and the sheets don’t fit well on the mattress, you’ll never achieve the kind of bed look that will entice you to lie down.

Perfectly stretched sheet

Start with a sheet. Choose a sheet that matches the dimensions of the mattress. Too large a sheet will wrinkle, create unsightly folds and bunch up. On the other hand, a small sheet simply won’t fit over the mattress. If you do, the seams won’t line up and, in the case of a fitted sheet, it will bunch up as you sleep.

Choose the dimensions of the sheet not only with regard to the length and width of the mattress, but also with regard to its height. There are also special sheets for mattresses with a thickness exceeding 30 cm. The sheet should completely cover the mattress.

Start by laying the sheet on the mattress so that the top corners perfectly cover the corners of the mattress. Slide the sheet under the mattress and stretch it towards your feet. The resulting effect should be a smooth and evenly covered surface. The sheet should not crinkle or slide out from under the mattress.

Linen duvets and pillows

Choose bed linen in a size that matches the duvet and pillows. The quickest way to make pillows and blankets is to turn the bedding inside out, put your hands in the corners, grab the pillow or blanket by the corners and slide the bedding on top of it. Shake the filling in the cover until it fits perfectly from edge to edge and corner to corner.

Linen and sheet materials

To make you want to go to bed, your bed must not only be beautifully made. The bedding must be made of fabrics that are comfortable for your skin. Be sure to avoid polyester materials. This is a fabric made from man-made fibres that:

  • he’s not getting any warmer,
  • it’s getting wrinkly,
  • attracts dust,
  • electrifies.

You’ll sleep best in natural materials. 100% cotton is a favourite, and even people with the most sensitive skin will love it. Cotton washes well, but it wrinkles a lot, so it needs to be ironed. If you want cotton bedding that doesn’t need ironing, you want cotton sateen. It cools you in the summer and warms you in the winter. Cotton flannel is also a warm and skin-friendly material. The softness is achieved by combing the cotton. Even crepe is a cotton fabric that does not need to be ironed. On the other hand, its finish may not be pleasing to everyone.

Like bed linen, sheets are made from a variety of fabrics. In this case, you can cover your mattress in cotton, satin, terry, or even a stretchy and smooth jersey material.

Layer, select colours and material textures

Once you’ve got your bedding done, you can start decorating. How to make your bed like a pro? There are a number of ways to choose. It’s up to you which one you choose. Feel free to try making the bed in a variety of ways. You may find that you prefer a different bed arrangement in winter than in summer.

Principles of folding pillows

When decorating the bed, the following are used sleeping pillows, so-called lumbar pillows, decorative small pillows in square and round shapes . In general, sleeping pillows are always closest to the headboard. How can you stack pillows?

Place three large decorative cushions against the headboard, with four larger square cushions in front of them. Place two smaller square cushions against these and finish decorating by placing one lumbar cushion.

For the next type of decoration, use two standard pillows that you put directly to the forehead. Place two larger square cushions against these. Place two rectangular cushions against these to decorate the two smaller square cushions.

The easiest way is to lay two standard pillows on top of each other. It’s a minimalist design that won’t offend anyone.

If you want to combine square and rectangular pillows, start by placing four standard pillows on the bed. Place two larger square cushions against these and place two rectangular cushions in front of them.

If you want to break up the geometric monotony of rectangular and square cushions, add a round cushion. Always fold the cushions so that their fastenings are not visible.

Bedspread

The duvet cover includes a bedspread. A duvet cover is a practical accessory that protects not only the duvet but also the rest of the bed from dust and other dirt. Plus, it looks designer and can bring additional texture to the bedroom. Some people use the bedspread as the aforementioned protection. However, you can use it as an additional thermal layer. You can use the bedspread to quickly disguise the fact that you didn’t make your bed before a visitor.

In order to be aesthetically pleasing, the bedspread should not only cover the sleeping area, but also overlap it. However, it should not reach all the way to the floor. Ideally, it should end about 30 cm from the ground.

The bedspread does not have to be stretched all the way to the headboard, it can start as high as one third of the bedding area. Pillows may or may not be on it. It depends on your taste.

Complementary blankets

You can spice up the bedspread with another blanket or a runner. A tread is a strip of fabric that is laid in the area where your feet are. The blanket can fall gently to the right or left side.

Where do I put my accessories to keep them handy?

Comforters, bedspreads, blankets and decorative cushions should have their place not only on the bed, but also outside it. These accessories are best stored where they are close at hand. For example, a high designer bed with storage space is ideal. This can hold not only spare bedding, but also blankets, bedspreads and changing mattress covers. If you match your bed to the seasons, you’re sure to have a range of these accessories. To avoid taking up unnecessary closet space, keep them in your bed.

Another practical storage space is the stool. This piece of furniture is usually placed at the foot of the bed. It completes and delimits the sleeping space. Underneath the seating area, there is usually a place where you can store bed accessories. The seating area is good for putting away a robe, a bedspread or an extra blanket that you need to keep nearby if you get cold at night.

A good night’s rest is not just about a nicely made bed

It’s true that a luxuriously made bed invites lounging. But to make it a truly great lounging experience, you’ll need a quality foundation, which is a mattress.

The quality of rest and sleep is largely dependent on the quality of the mattress. Keep a mattress in your bed that meets your sleep and health requirements. The most comfortable mattresses are those with a height of around 30 cm. A topper adds an extra layer of comfort. This is a thin mattress topper with a thickness of around 6 to 8 cm. As well as being a comfort layer, the topper protects the main sleeping mattress from dirt and extends its life.

In order to sleep in the most hygienic bed possible, you should have the mattress dressed in a cover and covered with a mattress protector. Both the cover and the protector are usually machine washable, so you can be sure that you always sleep in a perfectly clean bed.

Get yourself a royal night’s sleep. Arrange your bed so that you feel like sinking into it in the evening and enjoy a good night’s rest and sleep.
