What do today’s designer beds look like?

In recent years, one of the most popular high beds with upholstered headboards. These are king size beds with the classic dimensions of 180 x 200 cm. You can choose whether you prefer the boxspring option or the classic version with a slatted .

  • In terms of comfort, the so-called boxspring beds are popular and boast a leak-free design. A spring mattress is located at the bottom of the frame, replacing the grid. On top of this lies the top mattress, which you choose according to your requirements. The top mattress can be fitted with a topper. It is a thin mattress that increases comfort but also the hygiene of the bed. The boxspring bed has no storage space.
  • Beds without boxspring construction are also available. In the upholstered frame there is a grid on which the mattress is placed. This mattress can also be supplemented with a topper. As there is no spring mattress in the bottom part, there is still room for storage space.

Previously, you could only find these design gems in the most luxurious hotels. Their reputation as the most comfortable and eye-pleasing beds soon spread, and now you can enjoy a bed like this in your own home.

Upholstered frame

At Materasso, we manufacture bed frames from quality solid wood, which we soften with comfort foams and finally upholster. We use a variety of materials and fabric structures for the upholstery. For allergy sufferers, non-textile materials or eco-leathers are the most suitable, as they are easy to maintain. There is also a choice of fabrics with visible or smooth ribbing. Luxury designer beds are also upholstered in velvets that are pleasant to the touch. You can choose from a wide range of colours. We have a palette of more than 150 shades.

Stylish high forehead

Design beds do not lack an upholstered headboard. A bed with an upholstered headboard dominates the bedroom. It is mainly the aforementioned headboard that brings a certain style to the room. If you have your bed made to measure, you can choose which headboard treatment is best suited to your bedroom. Both beds with higher and lower headboards are available.

The fronts can be straight or ergonomically curved. The minimalist rectangular shape is popular. A headboard with rounded lines is suitable for rustic bedrooms.

In terms of decoration, the so called drawstrings are used, which may or may not be supplemented by decorative upholstery buttons. The drawstrings divide the headboard into smaller segments and draw attention to themselves.

The face area can also be divided by lines that form various geometric shapes. They can make the bed a magnificent art deco piece or a simple minimalist piece of furniture.

The high headboards can be fitted with upholstered inserts that effectively divide the whole area. Most often they take the form of squares and rectangles.

The width of the headboard can match the width of the bed, but it can also exceed it. If the headboard extends beyond the bed, it can be complemented with bedside tables to make the bed look complete.

Minimalist accessory in the form of legs

Although the legs are only a few centimetres high, they also contribute to the overall appearance of the bed to some extent. If you have a bed made to measure, you can choose whether the bed will be made on wooden, metal or plastic legs.

You can also choose the shape of the legs. You can opt for simple geometric minimalism or opt for unusual conical shapes and ornately machined feet. It depends on the style of your bedroom and the spirit of your bed.

Bed as the defining bedroom furniture

The upholstered bed is a dominant piece of furniture. If you’re just furnishing your bedroom, it’s the bed that will determine what style you should match your bedroom to. If you already have a bedroom furnished and only need to replace the bed, choose one that will work with the other furnishings and colour scheme of the room.

Bedrooms are most often furnished in the following styles:

  • Provence – Provence style is characterized by white or lavender colour, wooden elements, floral motifs. The ideal bed for a Provence bedroom should have a solid frame with a slatted headboard. For upholstered beds, choose headboards with rounded lines and embellishments with tufting.
  • Scandinavian style – is characterised by geometric shapes, simple lines, light colours in combination with a strong complementary colour. A Scandinavian-style bed should look light. Choose taller metal legs and a straight headboard without ornamentation, or a geometrically quilted headboard.

  • Boho style – these bedrooms are airy and full of bright colours. They’ll go well with a bed upholstered in white or cream. The headboard doesn’t need to be overly decorated.
  • Minimalist and modern bedrooms – straight lines and geometric layout dominate here. Everything is purposefully furnished. Reach for a white bed with an upholstered headboard decorated with geometric shapes. The bed must not lack chrome feet.
  • Industrial bedrooms – natural materials and imperfections are typical for them. The ideal choice is a leather or leatherette upholstered bed in brown or grey shades. The legs can be made of wood or metal.
  • Art deco – a whimsical, luxurious and mesmerizing style that is all about glitter, metallic colours and original geometric patterns. Art Deco beds are dominated by high headboards with exquisitely stacked geometric images.

Do tables have to match a modern designer bed?

In the past, care was taken to ensure that bedside tables and beds matched each other. You certainly won’t go wrong if you follow this same practice today. But recently, there have been bedrooms where thebedside tables and the bed don’t go together. However, it is important that both bedside tables are the same. Alternatively, the bedside tables should have the material or decor that appears in the bedroom.

The combination of wood and metal is a recent classic. However, you can also choose imitation stone or concrete and glass. These natural materials will go well with any design-oriented bedroom or upholstered bed.

Other furniture

To make your bedroom cosy, you shouldn’t miss a chair, stool or bench. It depends on space. The most comfortable armchair is the one with a backrest that ends slightly above your head. However, a chair with a backrest that ends halfway down your back can also fit you. Comfortable upholstery and optimally firm padding are important. You can add a footstool to the chair. A bench at the foot of the bed provides a place for a bathrobe or bedspread.

At Materasso, we can upholster your padded bedroom furniture in the same fabric as your bed to give your bedroom a harmonious look.

To sleep like a cloud in bed

In addition to design, other elements are also important when choosing a bed, and they contribute significantly to the quality of your rest.

  • Mattress – mattresses with a height of over 20 cm provide the most luxurious rest. In terms of production material, you can choose foams that differ in their properties, but also natural materials such as coconut boards or latex. In terms of comfort and durability, bag mattresses are popular.
  • Grid – The grid helps the mattress to distribute the pressure exerted on it by the sleeper when lying down. Thanks to the right grid, nothing is pressing on you and you can sleep undisturbed. You don’t have to change sleeping positions unnecessarily often, which can disturb a restful sleep.
  • Pillows and duvets – blankets and pillows filled with hollow fibre are recommended for comfort and hygiene. It is a hypoallergenic material that does not harbour germs. Memory foam pillows, which adapt to the shape of your cervical spine, provide you with quality and comfortable rest. Thanks to this, you get up in the morning without a stiff and sore neck.

Treat yourself and your bedroom to a designer bed that will become the jewel of the room and guarantee you the most comfortable sleep.
