How to choose an upholstered double bed?

The quality of your sleep reflects on your physical and mental health. If you sleep well, you cope better with stressful situations and are generally more efficient. How can you help yourself get good quality and restorative sleep? By choosing the right upholstered bed and matching mattress. What to look for?

Why is it important to make sure the bed is the right size?

When it comes to the size of a double bed, you need to take into account that you have enough space to sleep, but also that the bed’s dimensions should match the room.

If you choose a bed that is too small, there is a risk that neither partner will sleep comfortably on the double bed. You’ll be tossing and turning all night, fighting over your “piece of paradise”. But an unnecessarily large bed can lead to mutual alienation. The size of the sleeping area should therefore be neither too small nor unnecessarily large.

In terms of space, remember that a bed that is too big is not a good choice for a small bedroom. Ideally, each partner should have access to the bed from the side. Between the wall (or wardrobe) and the bed, there should be a passage about 60 cm wide. An unnecessarily large double bed will take up most of the floor space, making the bedroom feel cramped and uncomfortable.

Beds for small bedrooms:

  • Upholstered bed with dimensions 180 × 200 cm (this is the standard size of a double bed, often referred to as a king size bed).
  • Upholstered bed with dimensions 160 × 200 cm (it is a smaller double bed).
  • Upholstered bed size 140 × 200 cm (this size corresponds to a larger single bed and may not be sufficient for two people).

If you’re lucky enough to have a large enough bedroom, you can afford to equip it with a standard-sized bed, but also a larger bed.

Beds for a large bedroom:

  • Upholstered bed standard size 180 × 200 cm.
  • Extra large upholstered bed with headboard measuring 200 × 200 cm.
  • The extended bed for people who are over 190 cm tall has dimensions of 180 × 220 to 230 cm.

At Materasso, we can make you a bespoke bed to match your smaller or larger bedroom. The dimensions, but also the design or choice of mattress will be in your control.

Loading area height

Do you want to get into bed comfortably and get out of bed effortlessly? Then the sleeping surface should be between 40 and 50 cm off the ground. Older people will appreciate a sleeping surface that is 60 cm off the ground.

To find the optimal height for your body, sit on the bed and lower your feet to the floor. Your feet touch the floor and there is a 90° angle between your calf and thigh bones.

A high sleeping surface is also advantageous because you are protected from draughts and dust that sticks close to the ground. The height of the sleeping surface is influenced not only by the frame of the double bed, but also by the height of the mattress.

Processing and design of the bed

Purchasing a double bed is a major investment, so it is worth looking not only at the design but also at the quality of workmanship.

In terms of materials, you can choose between beds:

  • metal,
  • massive,
  • laminate.

If the metal beds are well made, they have a long service life. However, they can squeak. In addition, metal is a cold material that may not be comfortable on your skin. Nowadays, Lamino represents the ideal balance between price and appearance. However, from a practical point of view, you have to take into account a shorter lifespan and lower durability compared to solid wood or metal.

Nowadays, the most popular beds are fully upholstered beds with a solid frame. Solid wood is a natural material that does not release any chemicals. Upholstering with a comfortable cover and softening with foams will make sure that the bed provides maximum comfort.

Which design solution will suit you?

In terms of bed design, you can choose between several options.

  • Boxspring systemcontinental beds boast a boxspring system. The bed frame houses a boxspring structure that replaces the grid. The main mattress of your choice is placed on top of the structure. This bed offers the most comfortable rest. However, it has no storage space due to the spring filling.
  • Double bed with mattress and grid – a complete bed, thanks to which you do not have to waste time with the choice of mattress and grid. Everything is integrated in the bed frame. The bed may or may not include a storage compartment.
  • Bed frame only – in this case, you choose the bed frame that will best match the design of the bedroom furnishings. You then need to fit the frame with a suitable mattress and the right mattress. Again, you have a choice regarding the storage space.

The look is the icing on the cake

Match the design of the bed to the bedroom furnishings. The most popular bedroom styles include simple Scandinavian design or romantic French style, for example. For beds that we make to measure, you choose not only the colour of the upholstery, but also its type. We have fabrics available, but also non-textile materials, leather or leatherette. For example, for those with dust allergies, leatherette or non-textile materials are the best choice as they are easy to wipe dust off and do not harbour dust mites.

You will also be in charge of the forehead. The upholstered headboard can be the same or a different colour than the bed. You can choose simple or complex stitching, as well as decorating with different components.

The mattress and grid contribute to the comfort

In order to get a good restorative sleep, you need to choose theright mattress and mattress topper for your bed. These components determine how you will rest and sleep in your bed.

Choosing a mattress

The size of the mattress must always match the size of the frame. You can add a large double mattress or two twin mattresses to a double bed. A double mattress is particularly suitable for couples who are of similar weight. Otherwise, separate twin mattresses are recommended.

Mattresses are available in a variety of materials. Choose the material according to your requirements.

  • Latex – a natural material that is soft but not suitable for people who sweat a lot.
  • PUR foam – this is a foam that is one of the cheapest materials. A mattress made of PUR foam is especially suitable for occasional sleeping. To improve the properties, PUR material is combined with other foams.
  • HR cold foam – is breathable, dimensionally stable and eliminates dust mites.
  • Lazy foam – adjusts its stiffness according to the ambient temperature. It adapts best to the human body. It is suitable for people suffering from musculoskeletal problems.
  • Bio foams – are made from renewable resources in the form of natural oils. The mattresses are more resistant to mould and microbes. They are a great choice for allergy sufferers.
  • Springs – spring mattresses are durable, breathable and long-lasting. You can choose between bonell springs and more comfortable pocket springs.

You will also choose the firmness of the mattress, which is divided into 4 classes from very soft to very hard. Choose the firmness according to your weight. The more you weigh, the firmer the mattress. Very hard mattresses are for people weighing around 150 kg. Very soft mattresses are for seniors or sleepers weighing around 70 kg.

For the height of the mattress, remember the higher the mattress, the more comfortable the sleep. Mattresses with a height of around 10 cm are only suitable for occasional sleeping. Heights of 20 cm or more are suitable for everyday sleeping.

You can increase the hygiene of your mattress, which is extremely important especially for allergy sufferers, by using protective equipment, including protective covers and pads or toppers. The advantage of mattress protectors is that they can be machine washed.

Choice of grate

The choice of the mattress is closely related to the choice of the mattress. You can choose from a range of mattresses:

  • slatted – does not spring and is combined with spring or high foam mattresses,
  • slatted – The slats are springy and are mainly used for foam mattresses.

In addition, you can choose the design of the slatted grate:

You can also choose a slatted/massive grid design:

  • Static – is flat and cannot be positioned,
  • reclining – you can adjust the height of your head, legs or both. Positioning is manual or electric.

How to make the bedroom more comfortable?

To make your bedroom feel comfortable, furnish it with additional furniture (if space allows). Get bedside tables that are as high as the sleeping area. They will be easy to operate. The bedside table should be on either side of the bed.

In the bedroom you can create a nice relaxation or reading corner. Just place a comfortable upholstered armchair or boudoir with a high enough backrest in the corner of the room. To keep your legs stretched out while you read or listen to music, add a chair with an upholstered stool or footstool.

Don’t rush your choice of double bed. Allow yourself enough time to choose a bed that will be pleasing not only to the eye, but also to your body.
