You’ve probably heard of hotel extra beds. They’re used to provide extra sleeping space. But did you know that you can get an extra bed for your home? It’s a great solution for sleeping over for occasional visitors, but if you go for a quality design, it can also reliably replace a bed for everyday sleeping.

What does the term extra bed mean?

In general, a folding bed with a mattress is usually understood as an extra bed. Often, however, only the mattress is referred to by this term. A mattress topper is a thin mattress that may also be referred to as a topper. The height of a mattress topper varies between 4 and 6 cm and is usually placed on top of a supporting mattress or perhaps a couch.

What types of landings are there?

There are a variety of extra beds on the market, so you can decide on the option that works best in your home.

  • Folding bed – classic hotel extra bed. It is a bed with a folding mechanism in the middle of the frame. It folds “in half” and can have wheels for better transport. It includes a slatted grid and a quality mattress that is placed on the extra bed.
  • Sofa beds for sleeping – are also considered as extra beds. Since they are not designed for everyday sleeping, they are not very comfortable. Turning while sleeping can be hindered by the backrest.
  • Sofabed – a special sofa bed designed for everyday sleeping. Its advantage is a comfortable mattress that can be up to 18 cm high. Therefore, it will offer the same quality rest as a standard bed. It can be single or double bed size.
  • Extra bed as a stool – a smart solution if you need a place for occasional overnight visitors, but can’t have the bed always spread out. This extra bed folds three times. When folded and covered with a skirt, the extra bed becomes a stylish stool that serves as an extra place to sit.
  • A bed as a mattress – you can put it on the couch, on the floor or on the mattress in the bed.

What to look for when choosing an extra bed?

In addition to the type of extra bed itself, it is worth watching:

  • Construction – you want a quality and durable construction that doesn’t creak and is stable even when your guests are turning around on the bed. If your bed is going to be a folding bed, you want it to have wheels that make it easy to transport.
  • Dimensions – think about whether the extra bed will be for one or two sleepers. Choose the dimensions accordingly. Also take into account the fact that the cot will fit in the room.
  • Design – is especially important when you choose to sofabed. Its design should be such that it fits the room and is pleasing to the eye.

Use of extra beds in the home

The use of the extra bed depends on which design you choose.

Folding extra beds

They usually don’t have as good a mattress as sofabed. They come with a mattress up to 10 cm high, which makes them suitable only for occasional sleeping. If you have visitors staying over from time to time, they won’t be offended by the extra bed. Folding extra bed in the form of a stool is a great solution for apartments where there is not enough storage space. You don’t have to clean the bed, but use it as a place to sit. It has two functions, as a stool and as a bed. If you opt for a classic folding bed that folds in half, you will need to put it away somewhere so that it doesn’t get in the way. Unlike a stool, it has no other use.

Sofabed

The sofa bed with integrated high mattress reliably replaces the bed for everyday sleeping. It is a great solution if you live in a studio apartment or other smaller apartment where a classic bed would take up too much space. The extra bed is easy to fold and unfold. Fold it up in the morning, use it as a sofa during the day and sleep comfortably on it in the evening. In addition, this type is also suitable for a children’s room, living room or guest room.

Extra bed mattress

A thin extra mattress can be a temporary solution if your old conventional mattress is getting too thin. You can upgrade your old mattress with an extra bed mattress before you save up the money or choose a new one. It can also be used if you need to sleep on a couch, but it’s not very comfortable for sleeping. Some people find it difficult to sleep on split seat cushions.

You can also put the extra mattress on top of your new mattress. It will act as a protection against dirt and increase the comfort of the bed. Its advantage is the removability and washability of the cover. Depending on what material the extra mattress is made of, you can soften your main mattress or achieve a higher firmness.

Since the extra mattress is easy to store and move, you can take it with you, for example, in your tent, caravan or car where you are going to sleep overnight. If you’re going on business trips to hotels, it can keep you company there too. An extra mattress makes you feel more at home in a hotel bed.

Essential accessories for a comfortable sleep

Whether you sleep on a comfortable extra bed at home or in bed on a classic mattress, it pays to use mattress protectorsto protect it from dust, sweat and other contaminants. Thanks to the washable cover, you increase the hygiene of your bed.

In addition to the mattress, pillows and blankets also affect the quality of sleep. Among the most comfortable pillows are those made of memory foam, which adapt perfectly to your cervical spine. Hollow fibre is currently the most widely used filling in duvets. It has great thermo-regulating properties and since it is a man-made fibre, it does not harbour dust mites. This is especially appreciated by allergy sufferers.

With a carefully selected extra bed, you can provide your guests with a comfortable bed for occasional overnight stays.
