Each person is unique and has a specific body structure. Whether it’s height and weight, body type, age, health, fitness or gender – we all have completely different physical predispositions and therefore different sleep needs, which also change significantly with age. That’s why you can never recommend one mattress to everyone, no matter how good and comfortable it is. So forget about online shopping and find out how mattress selection should be done by real professionals.
We spend about a third of our lives on a mattress. During sleep, very important regeneration processes take place, the body needs to relax sufficiently, but at the same time have quality support to prevent unnatural spinal flexion and counterpressure that damages the joints. An unsuitable mattress can cause orthopaedic problems, sleep disorders and fatigue, and even impair circulation, contributing to the exacerbation of many other health problems. Choosing a mattress is therefore a highly professional process that should not be underestimated – after all, your health and your physical and mental condition are at stake.
There is no substitute for sleeping on a mattress that suits your exact needs. But as we outlined in the introduction, everyone’s body structure is different. That’s why even the best-rated mattress on the internet may not suit you. Don’t be tempted by advertising, ratings or mattress parameters and leave the choice in the hands of experts who take all the important factors into account.

However, personal selection is still no guarantee that you will get a suitable mattress. In practice, you may also encounter inexperienced salespeople who will show you a few models based on your weight and leave it up to you to decide. But a really qualified salesperson will be much more thorough, take the time to ask you about many other factors:
Based on the information obtained, the seller will then recommend about 3-4 different mattresses. Now it is up to you to test them properly and under supervision.

Because we at Materasso really care about individual attention to our clients, we do not sell our mattresses online. We believe that you shouldn’t buy a mattress without trying it out. You can try Materasso mattresses in person under the supervision of an expert at any of Materasso’s partner stores across the Czech Republic.

Even testing a mattress properly can be quite a feat. The key is to lie on each mattress for a sufficient amount of time, at least 10 minutes. Close your eyes, adopt your favourite sleeping position and purposefully relax all your muscles to get the most accurate sleeping state. Be aware that you will be sleeping on the mattress for 6-8 hours straight. However, you may start to feel various counter-pressures or discomfort after some time when the body is just starting to relax. That’s why it’s important to take your time and really feel the mattress. And what exactly should you look for?
When lying on your back, check carefully that the mattress maintains the natural curvature of the spine in the lumbar region. To find out, place your palm under your hip – it should just slip in. If there is not enough space between your hips and the mattress for your palm, the mattress is too soft; if your hand is loose, it is too hard.
When lying on your side, try to stay still for as long as possible and feel the counterpressure on the hip and shoulder joints. You say to yourself that after 10 minutes the mattress is pushing just a little, so it doesn’t matter? Wrong – after prolonged use of such a mattress, the pain will become unbearable over time and can even lead to joint damage. Properly, a mattress should keep the spine straight without lateral flexion when lying on your side, but not put any pressure on the large joints. Therefore, the hips and shoulders must be adequately recessed into the mattress so that the spine is aligned horizontally with the mattress.

In case you have found several mattresses that match your weight and health condition and you feel comfortable on them, you can try different smart aids. These are also useful if you cannot describe or perceive the subjective feeling on the mattress well enough. Such aids usually assess the pressure your body is exerting on the different parts of the mattress.
