Height of the mattress: a parameter you should consider when choosing
15 Mar

Sleep quality is influenced by the quality of the mattress. When choosing a mattress, you should consider not only its load-bearing capacity, stiffness and manufacturing material, but also the thickness of the mattress, which affects its durability and your comfort. So how do you choose the right mattress height?

Basic parameters for choosing a new mattress

If you are choosing a new mattress, you should follow these parameters:

  • length – the mattress should exceed the sleeper’s height by 20-25 cm,
  • load capacity – it should be about 5 kg higher than the weight of the sleeper,
  • hardness – corresponds to the sleeping position and weight of the sleeping person,
  • height – affects the life of the mattress, spinal support and sleep comfort,
  • material – the production material should match the sleep position, health problems and the type of mattress.

In addition to these variables, you also need to remember the type of mattress, as the mattress and the mattress must fit together. Together, they ensure even weight distribution and quality rest.

What mattress heights are there?

There are mattresses of different heights available on the market, starting at 5 cm and going up to 41 cm. In general, the higher the height, the better the quality of the mattress.

The height of the mattress consists of two numbers:

  • mattress core height – 6 to approx. 40 cm,
  • height of the cover – 1 to 3 cm.

Division of mattresses by height

Mattresses with a minimum height of 15-20 cm are recommended for everyday sleeping for an adult. The higher the mattress, the better the quality. Mattresses lower than 14 cm are only suitable for occasional sleeping. Thinner mattresses can be bought at a lower price, but you have to take into account that they will soon wear out. Higher mattresses tend to be more expensive, but because of their durability, you get a balance between purchase cost and length of use.

  • Height 6, 7, 8 cm – these are mattresses suitable for children’s beds.
  • Height up to 10 cm – these are usually low-quality mattresses that are not suitable for everyday sleeping.
  • Height above 14 cm – quality materials are usually used for production and it is possible to sleep on such a mattress every day.
  • Height up to 20 cm – comfortable mattresses whose core is composed of multiple layers, thus offering better possibilities for copying the body.
  • Height over 20 cm – mattresses between 20 and 40 cm are incredibly comfortable and reflect quality. In addition to people who have high demands on sleep quality, older people will also appreciate them, as a high mattress can increase the overall height of the bed, making it comfortable to get up from, but also easy to lie down in.

How do I choose the right mattress thickness?

Answers to basic questions will help you choose the right mattress height:

  • How often will you sleep on the mattress? – For everyday sleeping, the ideal height is 16 cm or more. For occasional sleeping you can get by with a lower quality product of a lower height.
  • What is your weight? – The height of the mattress is based on your weight, and people with a higher weight should go for a higher mattress with a higher load capacity and firmness. For an adult weighing 70 kg, a mattress height of about 13 cm is sufficient. For a weight of around 100 kg, a height of between 15-17 cm is advisable. People weighing over 130 kg should consider buying an even higher mattress.
  • Do you have any medical restrictions? – If you suffer from musculoskeletal problems, you should look for a mattress with a height of more than 20 cm. For seniors, the mattress can be as high as 30-40 cm.
  • On which grid will the mattress be placed? – If the mattress is going to be on a slab or a solid slatted grid, it is advisable to go for a height of 16 cm or more. A slatted mattress can be placed on a slatted grid with a lower height, as the grid is flexible and will help the mattress to distribute the pressure on it properly.

Mattresses for babies should have one firmness and a height in the range of 6-8 cm. Harder mattresses are recommended. For schoolchildren , harder or medium mattresses are ideal. The height of the mattress for these children should be around 14 cm. Soft or zonal mattresses are not suitable in any case, as they do not provide sufficient support for the child’s spine.

The height of the mattress for the elderly should be between 30-40 cm. It will make it easier to get up and get into bed. Older people should sleep on a softer mattress, the advantage is the reinforced side, which will prevent this part from sagging quickly.

For the height of the mattress, also take into account the bed frame, specifically the height of the sides. To prevent the mattress from sliding off the bed, the sides should hold it at least 1/4 of the way up.
