Even the blanket affects the quality of sleep. How to choose it correctly?
19 Feb

The German writer Heinrich Heine declared that sleep is the most remarkable discovery and we can only agree with him. Sleep has a significant impact on how we feel throughout the day. And in order to get the best sleep possible, you need to choose the right blanket, among other things. What to look for when choosing one?

There’s no blanket like a blanket and the choice of blanket matters if you want to sleep well and don’t want to be tossing and turning at night and waking up hot or cold. You should choose the right blanket based on several parameters. Apart from the dimensions , look at the season it is intended for and the material it is made of.

Dimension of the blanket

The standard size of the blanket in the Czech Republic is 200 x 140 cm. However, if you are taller, you may find that your feet stick out from behind the duvet at night. If this is the case, you can also choose a duvet cover with an extended length, the most common size is 220 x 140 cm.

Some people also prefer so-called French duvets, which are 200 x 200 cm or 220 x 200 cm and are designed to sleep two people. In addition to these standard sizes, you can also find atypical blankets or have a blanket made to measure.

Should I choose two separate blankets or one shared blanket?

We have already outlined above that there are also duvets for two, which are also thought of by bedding manufacturers, so you can easily find a bedding for a given size. The advantage of such a blanket is that partners can fall asleep under it in an embrace and, for example, warm up faster on cold days. A French blanket also looks more elegant and modern on the bed than two separate duvets.

On the other hand, not everyone may be comfortable sharing a blanket with a partner. Another disadvantage is that it is more difficult to handle and maintain.

Blankets by season

Are you cold under the duvet or do you sweat? Then you’ve probably chosen the wrong one. There are lightweight summer and warm winter blankets on the market , as well as versatile year-round blankets. So, is it better to choose multiple blankets for different seasons or to have only one all year round?

Summer and winter blankets

Summer blankets are very light and thin, and their filling is characterised by its low weight. They are simply designed to make you feel as comfortable as possible underneath them in the summer without getting hot.

Winter blankets, on the other hand, are thicker and have great thermoregulating properties, so they keep you perfectly warm even during the cold winter months. The materials most commonly used to make winter blankets include wool and microfiber.

Blankets for the transition period

You can also find medium-warm blankets that are designed for the transitional period, i.e. for the spring and autumn months. Such blankets should be well breathable.

Year-round blankets

Another option is blankets that are designed for year-round use. These blankets are therefore neither too thin nor too thick and offer the perfect compromise between a summer and a winter blanket. You will especially appreciate a year-round blanket if you don’ t have enough storage space at home. However, it does not suit people who find it too hot underneath in summer or too cold in winter.

What blanket material should I go for?

An important parameter when choosing a blanket and pillow is, of course, the material. Down duvets are popular, as they boast excellent insulating properties and long life, but you have to take into account the higher purchase price. Hollow fibre duvets are also a common choice and have the great advantage of being very light, warm, soft and easy to maintain. They are usually suitable for people with allergies.

Which blanket to choose for allergy sufferers?

As we have already outlined, blankets made of synthetic material are suitable for allergy sufferers. If you’re allergic to dust mites, you won’t go wrong if you get a hypoallergenic blanket with antibacterial properties.

What blankets are suitable for children?

A baby blanket should of course be smaller than a traditional duvet, for example, you will find sizes of 110 x 80 cm or 130 x 90 cm. As far as the weight of the baby blanket is concerned, it should ideally be around 450 g/m2 and should be made of a quality material that does not irritate sensitive baby skin.
