If you too are looking for the ultimate in restorative sleep, get a bed that will provide the perfect support for your spine. Thanks to the double mattress principle, continental beds ensure perfect pressure distribution, so you don’t roll around on the bed and wake up unnecessarily. What are the other benefits of these luxury beds? We can tell you that there are many.
If you’re choosing a new bed, don’t settle for average. Sleep on the beds that are currently the most comfortable. These are beds called boxspring, continental or American beds. They are especially popular in North America, but also in Scandinavian countries. That is why they are called American or continental.
Their fame has already reached Europe some time ago. In the beginning, you could only sleep on continental beds in the most luxurious hotels. Today, however, you can get them for your home.
Why is this luxury bed also referred to as a boxspring? Box is translated from English as box. In “bed” terminology, we can say that the word box refers to the bed frame. Spring is English for spring or feather. So the base of a continental bed is a boxspring or a frame with a spring filling.
What parts does a continental bed consist of?
A continental bed should not be missed in the bedroom of sleepers who want quality and comfort.
The main advantage of this design is the two spring layers that lie on top of each other. This is called the double mattress principle. Thanks to the double springing, the bed responds better to body movement and point loads. The spring section and the mattress complement each other, thus ensuring the most comfortable sleep throughout the night. You don’t have to change sleeping positions unnecessarily because nothing is pressing on you. You get up in the morning without pain in your support system because your spine is in the optimal position.
The spring base allows perfect air circulation. Therefore, the main mattress can breathe freely. It does not trap moisture, so you do not have to worry about mould and bacteria growth. You can sleep knowing that you are resting on a hygienic bed.
Bonell springs have a long service life and high load capacity. That is why even those who have a higher weight choose continental beds. The spring core distributes even heavy loads perfectly, thus extending the life of the main mattress.
The unquestionable advantage of the continental bed is its height. While the height of the sleeping surface of a conventional bed is around 40 cm from the ground, on an American bed you sleep at a height of up to 60 cm. The height of continental beds is much more comfortable. Why? Because the bed is comfortable to lie in and easy to get out of. You save your knees, hips, back and joints. This is not only appreciated by seniors, but also by expectant mothers.

The height of the loading area is partly influenced by the height of the mattress. How do you know if the height of the sleeping surface corresponds to your figure?
What other benefits does a high bed bring?
If you want a luxury bed, you want a continental bed. Not only does the all-upholstered design give it a touch of exclusivity , but so does the high headboard. If the bed is to dominate the bedroom, go for a richly quilted headboard. You can choose from several attractive geometric patterns based, for example, on the Art Deco style. If the design of your bedroom is more in the simple and minimalist direction, choose from a range of simple headboards with classic geometric patterns. Examples include the Argentina or Sirius designer bed.

At Materasso, we make beds to measure, so you can choose what type of fabric and colour you want to upholster your bed frame and headboard in. In addition to classic fabrics, you can also choose from non-textile materials or eco-leather, materials that are especially appreciated by allergy sufferers.
When choosing the dimensions of the bed, be guided primarily by the size of the bedroom. Although the bed is the main piece of furniture in the room, it should not completely overwhelm it. Then you would feel rather cramped in the bedroom, and that is not pleasant.
If your bedroom is smaller, with a floor area of around 12 m², go for a smaller double bed. This is typically a continental bed with a size of 160 × 200 cm. A 140 × 200 cm continental bed is the size of a larger single bed, so it won’t sleep two people very comfortably.
If you are one of the lucky ones with a bedroom larger than 13 m², equip it with a classic king-size continental bed measuring 180 × 200 cm or 200 × 200 cm. As we make our beds to order, we can make your bed to the dimensions you need. We can also make you a bespoke mattress.
Since continental beds have a frame filled with a spring base, there is no space left for storage.
However, in our offer you will find designer beds that meet even the highest demands for quality sleep. The beds are upholstered, so they have a softened and stylish frame. The colour and material of the cover are up to you. In addition, you can choose the mattress to suit your requirements. The sleeping surface of the luxury bed will therefore be at a height that suits your body. There is also a designer upholstered headboard. On top of this , you will find a large storage space under the sleeping surface.

Thanks to several types of hinged grates, you can access the storage space either from the side or from the feet. Depending on which approach you prefer. The designer bed combines the comfort of a continental bed but also offers practical storage space.
Get a bed that will delight not only your senses, but also your body.
