How to choose a quality bed grate?

A healthy sleep is influenced not only by the mattress, but also by a suitable grid. Only on the right mattress will the mattress be sufficiently ventilated and optimally distribute the pressure exerted on it. You can choose a fixed slatted, slatted or adjustable mattress. How to choose a quality bed grate? Find out in our article.

Why the grid is such an important part of the bed

The grid ensures good ventilation of the mattress. Thanks to it, mould does not form in the mattress and dust mites do not breed. If you have a mattress at home that is lower than 7 cm, the grid can take the load from it and distribute it evenly.

When choosing a bed mattress, its springing is important, as it takes care of the aforementioned load distribution. This allows the mattress to maintain an anatomical and stable surface much better. The more resilient the mattress, the better you can protect your mattress.

The grid is also indispensable for the bed for comfort. The better quality model you have, the more comfortable you will be lying on the mattress.

Decisive factors when choosing a bed grate

Before you decide to buy, consider aspects that will make it easier to choose the most suitable grill.

  • Your weight – grates are available with different load capacities. The range is wide and varies from 80 kg to 130 kg. In our offer you can also find grates with a maximum load of 150 kg.
  • Financial costs – the purchase price will be in line with the quality of the product. In general, slatted grates are cheaper, slatted grates fall into the middle price category and electrically adjustable grates are the most expensive. Remember that price is a reflection of quality.
  • Mattress – choose a mattress grid according to the mattress you have at home. Not every grate is compatible with every mattress. For example, you cannot use the same grid for a spring mattress as for a foam mattress.
  • Sleep habits – also choose a mattress based on whether you regularly read, watch movies or talk in bed before going to sleep. In these cases, you will appreciate a mattress with head positioning.
  • Health condition – especially seniors and elderly people after surgery will appreciate the electric motorized slatted grating, which will make their stay in bed more comfortable. The advantage of this design is the easy handling by remote control.

When making your selection, note the machining of the grates. The edges should be sanded. Better quality models have slats covered with foil, so you don’t have to worry about damaging the mattress with, for example, a splinter.

If you choose an unsuitable mattress, you can shorten the life of the mattress, lose comfortable sleep and not use all the potential that the mattress offers.

Two basic designs: static and positioning

The adjustability of the grate is a basic question you should answer before you start choosing a grate.

What is an adjustable grill?

An adjustable grate is a grate that allows you to adjust the optimum height in the head area, the leg area or both. Your cervical spine will appreciate the head tilt if you are reading, watching TV or chatting with your partner before bed. Of course, the reclining function is a boon for long-term bedridden people.

Positioning in the foot area is useful for anyone whose work places extreme stress on the lower limbs. These are usually waitresses, nurses, hostesses, drivers or people who have sedentary jobs. By raising the limbs, excess lymph is drained and swelling is avoided.

If you decide to go for it, don’t forget to take into account whether it will compatible with your mattress. It is generally suitable for mattresses made of flexible materials. It is not suitable for spring mattresses and lower quality mattresses that might break.

Positioning methods

How to choose a positioning grid? Depending on the positioning method. The grates can be positioned either manually or electrically by means of a motor. Manual positioning is done by lifting the strap.

Electric grid is equipped with motors that lift the individual parts to a position chosen by the user. The control can be either a remote control with a cable or integrated into the side panel. As the electric drive can also be located in the support frame, the grating will not be raised and can therefore be used in beds with storage space or a drawer.

The advantages of electric positioning include:

  • easy regulation without the need for force,
  • the possibility of positioning even when a person is lying on the mattress,
  • more positioning options compared to manual positioning.

The best electric grates have a safety switch that returns them to the standard position in the event of a power failure.

Positioning mattresses are suitable for monolithic mattresses made of a single unit or mattresses made of 2, maximum 3 foams. HR mattresses and combinations with linen or visco green foam are ideal. If the mattress is made of more than one foam or has an internal slit, there is a risk of the mattress unsticking or tearing. Its maximum thickness should be 21 cm.

Types and comparison of grates

On the market you can find slatted, slatted (or also slatted) and special tilting grates. Due to its unsuitable characteristics, a fixed board cannot be considered a full-fledged grate.

Slatted grate

Slatted grates are one of the cheaper options. They do not spring too much, but provide sufficient ventilation for the mattress. They are particularly suitable for spring mattresses and firmer foam mattresses with a higher core. Spruce or birch wood is most often used for the production. They are also available in a reclining version (in this version they are not suitable for combination with a spring mattress).

When buying this design, look at the number of slats, their width, thickness and the gap between each slat. This should be no more than 4-6 cm, otherwise the mattress may sag and deform. The slats should be free of knots and cracks that could cause them to crack.

Slatted grate

A slatted mattress is the ideal choice under foam mattresses. It can be purchased in fixed or manual and electrically adjustable versions. At least 28 slats are a sign of quality. Cheaper products have only 14-18 slats. In general, the higher the number of slats, the better the mattress can react and adapt to the load. The slats are made of spruce, beech or synthetic materials. They are mounted in rigid or swing-out sleeves made of plastic or rubber, which make them more responsive to loads.

Some slats are doubled in the most stressed areas (hips, shoulders). This is the T5 system, i.e. the stiffness adjustment system. The doubled slats have sliders that change their stiffness.

Tiltable grates

They are an obvious choice for beds with built-in storage. Depending on the availability of storage space, you can get them in a side-fold or foot-fold version. The lateral version is more convenient to operate. With the foot-operated hatch, the gas pistons make opening easier.

So how to choose a good quality grate?

  • The choice of bed mattress must be appropriate for your weight, sleeping habits and health.
  • Grates can be made of rigid slats or flexible slats. Slatted mattresses are suitable for flexible mattresses such as pocket sprung mattresses.
  • You can tell a quality grate by the material and workmanship, the number of slats/lamellas and the size of the gaps between them.
  • Adjustable mattresses are especially suitable for the elderly and people lying down for long periods of time, but they are also appreciated by those who read or watch TV before going to bed. However, the adjustable mattress must be compatible with the mattress.
  • The control of adjustable grates can be manual or electric.
  • Tilt-out grates are designed for beds with storage space. Gas pistons make opening easier.
