Do you want a good night’s sleep and a good rest? Get a high bed

A high bed is a sign of luxury. Not only does it look good, it’s comfortable to sleep on. You won’t be bothered by dust or draughts near the floor. The bed is comfortable to lie down in and easy to get out of. Find out more about high beds.

What does it mean when you say raised bed?

A raised or high bed means that it has a sleeping surface that is higher than a conventional bed. The height of the bed depends not only on the workmanship of the bed frame, but also on the height of the mattress.

Ordinary beds usually have a side height of between 35 and 45 cm. In a raised bed, the sides can be up to 55 cm above the ground. It depends on the design. With mattresses, you have a really wide range of heights to choose from. At Materasso, we not only make beds to measure, but also mattresses from 16 to 41 cm thick.

Combined with the raised sides and high mattress, the sleeping surface can be really high. A comfortable height is considered to be 50 to 60 cm above the ground.

How do you determine the optimal height of the sleeping surface for your body height?

You can change the height of the sleeping surface with the mattress. How to make the bed not too high but not too low?

  • Sit on the edge of the mattress.
  • Lower the legs to the floor so that the feet are flat on the floor.
  • If your knees are at right angles, your bed is at the optimal height.

If the mattress ends just below your back, you can easily sit on the bed and then lie down. However, you will have to “slide” down slightly when you get up.

What are the benefits of a raised bed?

The advantages of a high bed are as follows:

  • The bed is easy to get into and comfortable to get out of, so you don’t put unnecessary strain on your joints.
  • If you sleep at least 50 cm above the ground, you are protected from the dust that swirls near the ground. Allergy sufferers in particular will appreciate this.
  • Thanks to the high sleeping surface, you don’t have to worry about catching a cold or stiff muscles due to the drafts that occur near the ground.
  • The heat rises upwards, so even permafrosters willenjoy sleeping in a high bed.

High bed + reclining mattress = the most comfortable rest

Comfort is not just about a high sleeping surface. In fact, you can accessorise your high bed with reclining grates. This makes it easy to transform your classic bed into a reclining bed. Does the phrase reclining bed make you think of equipment that is only suitable for the elderly?

Yes, a bed with a reclining mattress is suitable for the elderly, but also for everyone who cares about quality sleep and rest. For example, it will be appreciated by people who are on their feet all day at work, have circulatory problems, suffer from clogged sinuses or varicose veins. Medical reclining beds are also suitable for patients in convalescence or for patients who are bedridden for a long time. However, even completely healthy people can afford a reclining bed.

Types of positioning grids

The positioning grids can be operated manually or electrically via remote control. Manual operation requires you to get out of bed and adjust the head and foot area manually. With an electric reclining grill, the electric motor does the work for you. The reclining bed is equipped with an electric control that allows you to adjust the inclination of your head and lower legs simply and comfortably using the buttons.

Mattresses for reclining beds

If you choose a bed with a reclining mattress, you should know that you need to choose a suitable mattress to go with it. This is because it is not compatible with every type. Spring mattresses do not belong on a reclining mattress. On the contrary, it is compatible with foam mattresses.

How to choose not only the right mattress height?

When choosing a new mattress, you need to keep an eye on the basic parameters:

  • The length of the mattress should exceed your height by 20 to 25 cm.
  • The load capacity of the mattress should be about 5 kg more than your weight.
  • The firmness corresponds to your sleeping position, your weight and your health limitations.
  • Choose the material according to your requirements and health problems.

The height of the mattress is a separate chapter. In general, the higher the mattress, the more comfortable the sleep. Choose the height of your mattress according to how often you sleep on it, but also according to your weight. How much you need to “raise” your bed can also be a determining factor.

Mattresses with a height of 6 to 8 cm are designed for children’s beds. If you are not going to sleep on the mattress every day, but for example only at the weekend at the cottage, a 10 cm mattress will do. For everyday comfortable sleeping, mattresses with a height of 14 cm or more are recommended. As we wrote, the higher the more comfortable the sleep. You can also rest on a mattress with a height of 40 cm.

Your weight also affects the height of the mattress. A simple rule of thumb says that the heavier the weight, the higher the mattress. If you have musculoskeletal problems, reach for a mattress that is higher than 20 cm.

Although high mattresses offer the most comfortable rest, remember not to slide off the bed. Either they should be at least ¼ recessed into the frame or, if there are two and they lie on the bed without sides, they should be fitted with a connecting element.

Health mattresses

Health mattresses are also available on the market. All those that have health benefits are referred to as such. For example, orthopaedic mattresses help with joint, back and cervical spine pain. Anti-allergy mattresses are made of materials that prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that cause allergies. Anti-acne mattresses are designed for people who are bedridden for long periods of time. If you are looking for a medical mattress that is a medical device, it must have the appropriate certification.

How to cope with insomnia?

If you suffer from sleep disturbances or wake up unrefreshed in the morning, your old bed and its furnishings may be to blame. Are you sleeping on a mattress that’s more than 7 years old? Is the mattress compatible with your mattress? Is your bed wrinkled?

Quality sleep also requires quality equipment. For hygiene reasons, you should change your mattress every 7 years. You can also replace it earlier if it is too old. Uneven surfaces and lumps can cause you to wake up frequently at night and get up in the morning with stiff muscles.

The grid helps the mattress to distribute pressure. A spring mattress or a mattress with a higher height is suitable for a fixed slattedmattress. You can easily place a thinner mattress on a flexible slatted grid. Thanks to the elastic slats, the grate will support all the load and you won’t be pushed anywhere at night.

If you hear the bed creaking or wobbling with every change in sleeping position, it’s time to get a new frame or a complete bed.

You sleep about a third of your life. And that’s enough to sleep on the most comfortable thing the bedroom furnishings market has to offer.
