Comfortable sleep in an oversized bed will be enjoyed not only by long-timers

Who are the extra large beds for? For tall sleepers, but also for those who like to roll out when they sleep and need plenty of space. Large beds are also appreciated by families who prefer to sleep together. How big are the beds available on the market and how do you choose the most suitable one?

Why is the right bed length important?

A few extra centimetres of body height offers a number of advantages. You can comfortably reach the top shelf, see better at a concert when there are crowds of people in front of you. But those few centimetres also come with disadvantages. Most products are designed for average-sized people. Those whose height makes them stand out have to find a way to live in a world of standard-sized people.

At Materasso, we make beds and mattresses to order. It doesn’t matter if you’re a longhair or a dwarf. Equipment from our workshop simply “fits” you. Did you know that if tall people sleep on a short mattress, they have to constantly “twist” their body to accommodate the uncomfortable length? Meanwhile, poor sleeping position can have negative effects on both physical and mental health.

Extended beds and mattresses are approximately 20 to 30 cm longer than the standard length. That’s why you can sleep comfortably and undisturbed even if you are over 200 cm tall.

Oversized beds not only for longhairs

Do you want to sleep comfortably? Then you need a good quality mattress, but also a large enough bed. While some people like to snuggle, others like to wiggle a lot and need plenty of space. Someone else is 180 or 190 cm tall and is at risk of having their legs sticking out of the bed. Some families want to be as close as possible, so parents sleep in the same bed with their children. Which beds can you choose from?

  • King size bed – 180 × 200 cm, it is a classic size of a double bed.
  • Super king size bed – larger than a king size bed with dimensions around 200 × 200 cm.
  • Family bed – giant beds that can comfortably sleep the whole family. Measures 270 × 230 cm.
  • Extended beds – designed especially for sleepers who are over 190 cm tall. The bed can have an extended length of 220 to 230 cm.

The extra-large bed can comfortably accommodate all those who frequently change their sleeping position or stretch out at night. At the same time, these beds are also suitable for sleepers with a higher weight.

With extra large bed for large bedroom

Choosing the size of an upholstered bed is not just about the size of the sleeper or sleeping habits, but also about the size of the bedroom. If you have a small bedroom that you completely fill with bedding, you will feel cramped and frustrated in it. Plus, you won’t have room for bedside tables or a dresser. Conversely, in a large bedroom, a king size bed will be unnecessarily small and you will feel lost in your bedroom.

What size bed to choose for larger and smaller bedrooms?

  • Small bedrooms – choose smaller beds for bedrooms that are less than 12 m². These are typically larger single beds with dimensions of 140-160 × 200 cm.
  • Bedroom of standard dimensions – the floor area is about 12 m², which is just enough for a bed and bedside tables. In such a bedroom, you can put a standard king-size bed measuring 180 × 200 cm.
  • Giant luxury bedroom – you can easily fit extra large or extended beds in a bedroom with a floor area of more than 14 m². A great choice is a super king size bed with dimensions of 200 × 200 cm and wider, but also a family bed.

Although giant family beds are not so common in our latitudes, their popularity is increasing, especially among families with smaller children. Co-sleeping is gaining in popularity.

Particularly in families with a new baby, co-sleeping is preferred. It is said that if mum and baby sleep together, their sleep rhythms are aligned. In addition, mothers can breastfeed their babies in bed. Maximum closeness to the baby is also convenient for the mom in that she does not have to get up at night to comfort the crying baby. Often, just a whisper or a caress is enough and the baby falls asleep.

Extra large beds should have a higher sleeping surface

In addition to the length of the bed, the height of the sleeping surface, which is measured from the ground to the lying part of the mattress, is also very important. A sufficiently high bed allows you to get up and down comfortably without unnecessary strain on your knees and hips.

How do you find out the height of the bed?

  • Sit on the edge of the bed,
  • lower your legs down so that your feet are flat on the ground,
  • if there is a 90° angle between the femur and the fibula, the bed is at the optimum height.

In addition to the comfort of lying down and getting up, the high loading surface is also advantageous in that it protects you from dust swirling near the ground and from drafts. While conventional beds have a sleeping surface 40 cm above the ground, high beds with upholstered headboards have a sleeping surface height of between 60 and 70 cm. It depends on the height of the mattress.

What should a proper oversized bed look like?

In addition to the necessary dimensions, durable material, a sufficiently large mattress and design also play an important role.

The massive bed is TOP

In terms of manufacturing materials, you can find metal, laminate and solid wood in the world of beds.

  • Metal – it is durable and has a long service life. However, it feels cold and there is a risk that the joints will start to creak over time.
  • Lamino – is one of the cheaper materials and is available in a variety of decors, including those that closely mimic wood. Compared to solid wood and metal, it has a short service life. It is not the highest quality material.
  • Solid wood – for the manufacture of beds is the most popular. It is a hypoallergenic material that is suitable for allergy sufferers. It boasts a long service life and durability.

Design processing

In terms of design, upholstered beds are the most popular. At Materasso, we manufacture the body of the bed from solid wood, which is then covered with soft foams and upholstered with fabric. You can choose from hundreds of materials and thousands of colours. The bed is therefore pleasantly soft and there is no risk of injury if you trip or fall on the bed.

Upholstered beds include a high headboard. This protects the sleeper from the cold from the wall, but also gives him a feeling of security. In addition, it is a comfort element. You can lean against the soft, upholstered headboard, for example, when you are reading in bed, watching TV, doing a crossword puzzle or chatting with your partner.

A bigger bed requires a bigger mattress

Just as standardised beds are made, standardised mattresses are also made to fit the bed. But what if your bed is longer or wider? In our workshop, we can make a bespoke mattress. Unusual dimensions or shapes are not an obstacle for us.

For the mattress you can choose:

  • Height – the higher the mattress, the more comfortable the sleep. The most comfortable and highest mattresses are 30 cm high.
  • Width and length – we do not only produce standardized mattresses 180 × 200 cm, but also mattresses with extra length or width.
  • Firmness – there are 4 levels of firmness, with medium-firm mattresses being the most popular. Older people should sleep on softer mattresses. People with a higher weight on harder mattresses.
  • Production material – we produce mattresses from a wide range of materials. Bonell and pocket mattresses are most suitable for people with higher weight. For the elderly, we produce special senior mattresses with a reinforced edge. Latex and bio foam mattresses are appreciated by allergy sufferers. For those who have joint problems, mattresses made of lazy foam are most suitable. We also offer cold and PUR foam mattresses.

The most comfortable mattresses include orthopaedic zone mattresses. The mattress can have up to 7 zones. Each zone has a different firmness that corresponds to a specific part of the body. Thanks to this, it provides sufficient support for the support system and keeps it in a healthy position while sleeping. Are you interested in this mattress? For a long bed with a long grid

Nowadays, it enjoys popularity boxspring bedsthat don’t have a grid. The base consists of springs on which the main sleeping mattress is placed. The boxspring base replaces the grid to the full extent.

If you prefer a classic bed with a slatted frame, go for a slatted bed that matches the length and width of the frame. We can make a bespoke grate for an extra-large bed.

We offer grates:

  • slatted – these are fixed slats that are combined with spring mattresses,
  • slatted – flexible grates suitable for foam mattresses,
  • positioning – the grates can be positioned manually or electrically. They are suitable not only for the beds of seniors, but for all who desire the most comfortable sleep. They allow the adjustment of the optimal height of the head and lower limbs.

Don’t curl up in a small bed. Enjoy a comfortable and healthy sleep in a bed that fits your height and sleeping space requirements.
