What foams and covers are used to make the most luxurious mattresses?

A survey by the National Sleep Foundation found that 92% of people find a quality mattress essential to getting a good night’s sleep. So the right mattress can mean the difference between a sleepless night and a sound sleep. Let’s take a look at what role mattress foams and mattress covers play during sleep.

Get to know all types of foam mattresses

Important parameters when choosing a quality mattress include not only the dimensions and hardness, but also the material from which the mattress is made. You can find, for example, spring mattresses, latex mattresses or foam mattresses, which are currently among the most popular.

However, there is no such thing as a foam mattress, given that there are a multitude of foams that are used to make mattresses. That’s why at Materasso we are constantly coming up with new manufacturing technologies and enriching our mattresses with unique materials and original covers.

What types of foams can you encounter when choosing a mattress?

PUR foam

PUR foams are characterised by their fine structure and lower elasticity, which leads to the mattress becoming significantly softer after several years of use. PUR foams also have a firmer feel and should be placed on slatted grids, which help to distribute the weight of the body better.

HR foam

HR foam, which is also sometimes referred to as cold foam, is valued for its high point elasticity, which makes it ideal for adapting to your body.

When choosing foam mattress materials, it is a good idea to focus on the density of the material. This is because the higher the density, the longer the mattress will last. Higher density also guarantees the stability of the mattress properties. With a lower material density, the foam is more prone to permanent deformation.

HRC foam

A higher class of HR foams are HRC foams (High Resilience Climate). The advantages of these foams are their high elasticity, stability of properties in the face of climate changes and also good breathability.

The significant difference between HR and HRC foams was highlighted by a Swiss mattress manufacturer through a test that compressed both foams for the same amount of time at the same temperature and humidity. What was the result? While the HR foam returned to only 40 to 60% of its original height, the HRC foam returned to 80%. The HRC foam can be enriched with lavender extract, for example, which will make you sleep even better.

Lazy foam

Another foam that is used quite often is lazy foam, which is also known as visco foam, lazy-foam, memory foam or thermopur foam. It is a foam with exceptional orthopaedic properties. It responds to heat and pressure so that the moment you lie down on the mattress, it adapts perfectly to the shape of your body. It distributes the weight of the body evenly, reducing the mattress’s back pressure on the joints and spine. The lazy foam also has the benefit of promoting blood circulation and relaxing the muscles while you sleep.

Neroli foam

The foam can be beneficial not only for your body, but also for your mind thanks to the effects of aromatherapy. The Neroli foam, which is enriched with orange blossom essence, is proof of this. This is one of the most expensive oils in the world, using one ton of hand-picked orange blossoms to produce just one liter of this oil. The oil, which is included in the most luxurious perfumes, is not only characterized by its pleasant scent, but also by the fact that it calms the nervous system.

Biogreen and Viscogreen foams

Biogreen and Viscogreen foams are popular because they are environmentally friendly. However, this is not their only advantage. The foams contain castor oil and Aloe Vera extracts and have a high load capacity of up to 170 kg.

Greengel foam

Greengel foam is characterised by its high density and high airiness. It is mainly used for the upper lying surface of the mattress, where it serves to quickly wick away moisture and prevent the body from overheating. At the same time, its high elasticity means that it does not degrade the comfort of other foams.

Foam Sanitized

A foam that is the ideal choice for allergy sufferers? Sanitized antibacterial foam, which is made with substances that protect the mattress material from mould, bacteria, mites and fungi. In addition, it also protects the mattress from odours.

Oxygen foam

Oxygen foam is based on a special filling method that gives the material an open cell structure. This ensures that moisture and pollutants do not accumulate in the core of the mattress. People who sweat at night will especially appreciate the excellent thermoregulatory properties.

Focus on mattress covers

The key part of the mattress is not only the foam, but also its cover. It can also play a crucial role in how long a mattress lasts and how comfortable it is, for example.

At Materasso, we manufacture the mattress covers ourselves. Our mattress covers are quilted with different weights of hollow fibre and some are quilted with softened soft foam, or linen foam, to further enhance the comfort of the mattress. Again, you may come across several types of mattress covers.

Tailor-made zone mattresses
An important part of the mattress is the cover, which can be enriched with various health benefits.

Aloe Vera cover: contains extracts from the Aloe Vera plant, which have a positive effect on the skin.

Algua cover: the uniqueness of the Algua cover is that it contains microcapsules with extracts from the marine algae Spirulina, which release minerals, amino acids and antioxidants.

Olivoil cover: Contains microcapsules releasing vitamins E, A, D and K. These act against skin aging.

Bamboo cover: The cover is naturally antibacterial due to the fact that it contains natural bamboo fibres.

Silver coating: the Silver Protect treatment containing silver ions reduces odour-causing bacteria by up to 90%.

Lyocell cover: Thanks to its wood cellulose fibre content, this cover absorbs and wicks away moisture.

Eucalyss cover: contains extracts from the Eucalyptus Citriodora plant, which repels intrusive insects such as mosquitoes.

Lavender cover: the Lavender cover with lavender extracts also effectively repels insects and deepens sleep.

Greentex cover: thanks to its probiotic bacteria content, it effectively eliminates allergens and is therefore also suitable for allergy sufferers.

Silk Touch cover: soft as silk. Silk Touch is an exclusive fabric made using nanotechnology.

If you want to get the best quality sleep possible, pay attention to your choice of mattress foam and cover. Nowadays, you can choose special materials that make your sleep even more comfortable.
