4 tips on how to choose the most suitable double bed

As one makes one’s bed, so one lies down. The double bed is an essential part of every bedroom. Do you know what to look for when choosing one? First and foremost, the dimensions, not just of the bed, but of the bedroom, a suitable mattress and breathability.

1. Choose by size

It’s important to have enough space in your bed to sleep well. If the bed is too small, there is a risk that neither partner will sleep comfortably as there will be a “fight” for space all night. Too big a bed, on the other hand, leads to estrangement between the couple. When choosing the size of the bed, take into account the space available in the room. Remember that bedside tables need to be placed next to the bed and the space between the bed and the wall or wardrobe should be at least 50 centimetres.

Width and length of the bed

The width and length of standard double beds are 180 x 200 centimetres. However, it is possible to have an extended bed made, where the length is 210-220 centimetres. Choose the length according to the height of the tallest person sleeping in it and
be sure to add an extra 25 centimetres. When choosing the width, consider the dimensions of the sleeping area, not the bed frame.

Bed height

The sleeping surface should be at least 40-50 centimetres from the ground. For older people, the height of the sleeping surface can be 10 centimetres higher. The height can be influenced by the choice of mattress and mattress.

To select the optimal height, sit on the edge of the bed with both feet on the floor. There should be a 45° angle between the calf and thigh bones.

Sufficient height protects you from draughts flowing between the floor and the door, but also from swirling dust. It also has an effect on the life of the mattress, which can breathe well thanks to sufficient height, so that it is free of dust mites, allergens and mould.

2. Hull construction and design processing

The design of the hull depends on your requirements. It may or may not be equipped with a storage compartment or have infinite electric positioning, for example in the case of a slatted grid.

Continental bed

Nowadays, one of the most popular types is the continental bed, which is wide enough and high enough to be easy to get up from, but also comfortable to lie down in. The continental hotel bed is standard in all the world’s four- and five-star hotels.

The basis of the bed’s uniqueness is its sophisticated construction, which consists of two and sometimes even three parts.

  1. Boxspring – a wooden frame fitted with a spring mattress, which ideally distributes the pressure absorbed by the supporting mattress and at the same time gives the whole structure a natural rigidity and rebound flexibility.
  2. A supportive mattress – choose one that meets your firmness requirements and adapts to your body’s needs.
  3. Topper – an additional mattress that enhances the feeling of comfort and the experience of deep sleep on these beds.

Boxspring Tilt Maxi

This is a boxspring bed that also offers storage space inside the bed. The storage space is designed without internal divisions, so you can make the most of it. The space is easily accessible from all sides of the bed.

Boxspring Mobil

The continental bed is equipped with a function of continuous positioning of the head, torso and legs by remote control. The fact that the bed has no sides allows you to set the best position for resting. Mattresses made of cold, lazy and thermo-elastic foams are best suited for the reclining bed, but also latex mattresses or those with anatomically cut cores.

Bed with storage Metal

Solid traditional bed with storage space. It is suitable for a common partner mattress. The sides can be 5 or 8 centimetres wide and 30 or 35 centimetres high. Thanks to the unique mechanism, which is equipped with pneumatic pistons, the sleeping surface is easy to lift even with a heavy mattress.

Design Bed

It is a basic construction of an upholstered bed that can be combined with a comfortable headboard. It can be fitted with different types of slats: fixed slats, flexible slats, with manual or electric positioning.

Upholstered double beds

You will recognize them at first sight, as they are design pieces. The construction and the headboard are covered with a pleasant fabric. The advantages of this type include variability in the design of the headboards, storage space or the dimensions of the sleeping area. Upholstered beds make the whole space cosy. The advantage of fabric upholstery is the variety of colours and patterns.

Good advice: The body of the bed should be fitted with wedged, not just bolted, screws. This is because bolted joints will loosen more quickly.

3. With or without storage space

For a double bed, the storage space can be located directly in the bed or underneath it. If the storage space is located in the bed, it is a good idea to reach for tiltable grates with a metal structure that swing out from the foot of the bed using a special mechanism. The flip mechanism uses pneumatic pistons that make it easier to access the storage space, even if you sleep on high partner mattresses.

If you have enough storage space at home and its presence in the bed is not important to you, reach for a product without storage space. This is because the storage space leads to imperfect air circulation in the mattress, so you will need to clean or ventilate it more regularly to prevent odours and bacteria.

4. Type of mattress

When buying a mattress, it depends on the type of bed. For example, boxspring beds don’t have high enough sides, so you need to reach for a twin mattress because the singles would roll out.

For other types of double beds, it is recommended to go for split mattresses. Each partner has different weight and firmness requirements. A common problem with a single large mattress is that one partner can displace the lighter partner with their weight. Every movement on such a mattress is felt. Therefore, it is better to reach for two mattresses that will meet the individual requirements of the sleepers. Two mattresses are also more practical to maintain, as the cover of the partner mattress cannot be washed in a regular washing machine.

What to look out for when choosing

Choosing a bed is not only about design, but especially about quality, airiness and comfort. These three parameters definitely stand above the design side of things.

  • Quality of workmanship – focus on the strength of the joints used, which significantly affect the life of the bed. The material that supports the bed must be strong and stable. The bed should not wobble or creak.
  • Breathability – insufficient breathability of the sleeping surface negatively affects the life of the bed and sleeping hygiene. Sweat is absorbed not only into the mattress but also into the storage space. Therefore, make sure that the bed is well ventilated.
  • Comfort – the question of comfort is individual, but the choice of mattress and mattresses is a major factor. You should not forget about sufficient height. It should be comfortable to get out of bed, but also to lie down in it.
