Why should you have a twin mattress in your double bed?
26 Apr

Sleep is a natural process during which our body regenerates. Therefore, it is important that it is as good as possible. Among other things, the quality of sleep is also influenced by the mattress. Some people prefer to sleep on a harder mattress, others on a softer one. But how do you solve sleeping in a double bed when the man and woman have different requirements for the firmness of the mattress?

A partner mattress is not the same as a mattress for a couple

A common misconception is that the term partner mattress is confused with the term mattress for a spouse. What is the difference between the two?

Marriage mattress

A double mattress usually has dimensions of 180 × 200 cm. It is a solid mattress that has a single firmness over the entire sleeping surface. However, this particular firmness may not suit one of the sleepers. Mattresses are chosen not only according to the size of the bed, but also according to the individual requirements of the sleeper. The weight of the sleeper, the preferred sleeping position, health problems and the desired firmness must be taken into account. Rarely do spouses have the same weight and agree on the same firmness. Usually one of them has to make a concession. Individuals who are light sleepers will feel their partner’s every movement, which can interfere with restful sleep. On the other hand, this is a full mattress with no gap in the middle, which will be appreciated by partners who like to snuggle together or sleep in a bed with children.

  • + without a space in the middle,
  • + comfortable if the child sleeps in the bed with the parents,
  • – only one stiffness,
  • – more difficult to handle when cleaning, turning or moving the mattress,
  • – the movement of one partner is transferred to the mattress half of the other partner,
  • – not suitable for adjustable grates.

Twin mattresses are characterised by being the same height, which means that if you place them in the bed frame, they form a solid surface, albeit with a gap in the middle. The advantage of couple mattresses is the double firmness. Each mattress has one firmer side and one softer side. Both man and woman can therefore choose the firmness that best suits their requirements. Men generally choose a firmer firmness for sleeping than women. This is due to physiology, body structure, but also to differences in weight or height. If the sleeper experiences a change in weight or develops health problems, there is nothing easier than turning the mattress over. Mattresses for two are often offered at a bargain price, so you don’t have to worry about paying more than you would for one large mattress.

Other benefits of couple mattresses include easier maintenance and handling. The cover can usually be split into two halves, so you can wash it in a regular washing machine without any problems. In addition, there is no problem airing or turning the mattress as it is lighter in weight than a single large mattress. A 90 × 200 cm mattress can weigh around 15-25 kg, while a double mattress can weigh as much as 50 kg. However, you don’t have to use a double mattress only in a double bed. They can also find a place in the guest room. The visitor will be able to choose the firmness that suits them best. Even children will appreciate the double firmness.

  • + same height,
  • + different stiffness on each side,
  • + each partner has a choice,
  • + they can also be used in children’s beds,
  • + easy handling and cleaning,
  • + use on adjustable grates,
  • – a gap in the middle.

How do I challenge the gap between the mattresses?

One of the disadvantages of two mattresses lying side by side is the gap that is created between them. This can cause the mattress to slide off the bed. Fortunately, there are several simple solutions to this problem.

  1. The bed should have sufficiently high sides into which the mattress can be sunk, at least 2/3 of its height. This prevents the mattress from rolling out.
  2. You can place a large foam topper or protector over the mattress, which, by attaching at the corners, will hold the mattress together and cover the gap.
  3. You can insert a simple bridge between the mattresses, which is usually made of PUR foam, so it adapts to each mattress.
  4. Get a large cover to put both mattresses in.

The ideal solution for partners with a large weight difference

A partner mattress also solves the problem for partners with a large weight difference. Because each side of the mattress has a different firmness, not only the heavier partner but also the lighter partner will sleep well. In addition, the movement of the heavier partner will not bother the other partner. The main disadvantage of a single large double mattress is that it transmits motion, which can be bothersome for the lighter sleeper. In addition, there is a high probability that the lighter partner will “roll” to the side with the heavier load.

In addition, the part of a large shared mattress on which a person with a higher weight sleeps is more quickly worn out. You will therefore have to buy a new mattress, even though the half with less weight will be perfectly fine. With twin mattresses, you only need to replace one mattress or turn it the other way. Two mattresses for a couple will thus save your family budget considerably.

You spend a third of your life sleeping. Don’t compromise and sleep on a mattress that perfectly matches your requirements.
